These days, most of us have a very long day. Between work, dealing with the kids, handling issues with pets, spouses or friends and more, we barely have time to kick back and unwind. That’s why it’s so important to make the most of your relaxation areas, like your bedroom.
The problem with most bedrooms is that they aren’t relaxing at all. Part of that is because we’re often too tired at the end of the day to pay attention to what we do.
You throw everything down on the ground at the end of the day and it doesn’t take long before it looks like a bomb site. Therefore, it’s not the best place to try and unwind. Fortunately, there are some quick and easy things you can do.
First of all, put a small table or shelf right inside your bedroom door. There, you can lay your car keys, wallet or other small items.
Put your shoes by the door as well. Or you could have a special shoe rack in your wardrobe so they are tidied away. By simply making sure all the small things in your life are cleaned up you can prevent your room from looking like a battleground.
Next, set up three hampers in an out of the way spot. Make sure that they have lids. Open laundry baskets look cluttered and create stress. Use one hamper for whites, one for darks and one for lights. Take the moment that it takes to drop your clothes in the hamper and they won’t clutter up the room.
Lastly, make it a point to sort and put away your finished laundry. Have sufficient closet space where you can place them out of sight and ready for use anytime.
If you find that you have more clothes than you have closet space, pick out the ones that you no longer use and dispose of them by reusing or giving them away to somebody or to charity. This is an effective way to keep your bedroom in order and to reduce, if not eliminate, stress.

The rise of the so called super athletes has been phenomenal over the last ten years. Many sports people men and women have excelled in their sports and set new records. This however pails into insignificance when you also consider the growing number of them that have either been proved or accused of using drug enhancements to help them to set these records.
When you look back at all the wonderful athletes of many yeas ago that managed to attain record feats without the help of such drugs, it certainly makes you wonder how you can compare today’s athletes with those from another era!
Such is the concern surrounding drug taking in sport many fans have decided to let their feet do the talking and boycotted the sporting events altogether. Major League Baseball is one such problem area.
Although the latest facts and figures show that Baseball attendances are only down by about 2 percent it is a major concern. This is mainly due to the fact that many other sporting events have seen increased attendances. No league wherever it is wants to see their attendances dropping.
This is one of the main reasons why Bud Selig and his science advisors in Major League Baseball are trying to formulate a blood test to test for human growth hormone. Selig along with many others feel that HGH should be banned completely in sport.
You could argue that it is already banned in Major league Baseball but as there is no official test to police this then it is very hard to ban somebody. There is only at the moment an honor system in place which evidently is not the best solution to the problem.
Even if any of the Baseball players decided to use enhancement drugs in their quest for a better performance, it is highly unlikely that they are going to be honorable enough to admit using them!
At least we can still look back to the great athletes of yesteryear who managed to excel in their profession, and do it with pride.

When people speak of allergies most people think of hay fervor or peanuts. In fact on allergy that some people have is to that chocolate. Chocolate is a great and delicious treat and helps to put you in a better mood. But there are some risk. If you find it hard to breathe after eating chocolates then you may have the allergy.
Don’t give up all hope though, oh thou chocoholic. There are very few people who are truly allergic to chocolate. Often, people are allergic to added ingredients in the chocolate.
Sometimes, there can be more than one trigger in the particular type of chocolate you are eating. If you are allergic to more than one thing, this is especially true. There might be dairy, gluten, soy, corn, nuts, the list could go on and on.
Reaction can be life threatening like anaphylaxes. Other are less sever. Watch for symptoms like headache and inching, breathing problems and hives. This will tell you that your body is in trouble.
So you have a food allergy. Take it serious and be sure to avoid those food in your diet. This is easier said then don but it is a must. Allergies get worse over time. Here is some suggestions that will help you get back on track.
First read read read. NO not the TV guide the labels on your food. Manufacturer are required by law to provide a list of the ingredient. Included in that fine print you may find a lot of food on the top danger allergy list. Read the list through checking for your triggers.
When dinning out to avoid and asthma flare up ask if the food has sulfits added to it. This rule applies to shopping as well. So read much breathe well.
Perhaps if you have a severe allergy and you are eating out, it would be wise to tell your server of your allergy and explain what happens if you eat something you are allergic to. If your server realizes how serious your condition is, they will be better able to meet your needs and warn you of anything you should know about.
You can also ask your server to pass the word along to the cooks. They may use the same pans and serving dishes to serve different things, and this could lead to cross contamination. They will then be able to meet your needs if they know of your condition.

Many retirees look into selling their homes and moving into an assisted living facility after their kids are out of the house and have children of their own.
When it comes to popular destinations for seniors looking to make a new life, Utah is near the top of the list. Many retirees actually set up a dual elder care system where they live in one state and enjoy the summer months in one area then move to another state for the winter months, getting the best of both worlds in the process.
Quite a few of these seniors divide their homes between Utah and Arizona. These people have been nicknamed “snow birds” since they move north or south every year to keep up with the changes in temperature. It keeps them from having to experience the extremes in temperature at either end of the spectrum.
Since Arizona offers very temperate winters with temperatures usually staying in the 60s, it’s a popular destination for seniors who want to avoid to brutally cold winters of other areas. They live there for six months from October to April, where they enjoy the warmth and the outdoor activities offered by assisted living facilities.
For spring and summer, these snow birds move north to Utah to avoid the coming heat waves of Arizona that see temperatures reach 80 degrees in April and keep rising up to 110, all the way through the end of September.
This movement between climates allows aging seniors to maintain a comfortable living environment, eliminating the need to bundle up for frosty winters or endure the unbearably hot summers of some areas.
Utah offers very reasonable real estate prices as well, which tends to draw in more people. Assisted living facilities in Utah are quite cheap compared to those in some other parts of the country.
For these reasons, Utah makes a good destination for retired seniors, or really, for anyone looking to start anew in a fresh place.

I’m pretty smart and get most things. But there are some things, like dodgeball, that I just don’t get at all. Why do kids hit each other with hard balls and consider this fun? I don’t understand it. Is this a game, or some sort of publicly acceptable form of torture? When it comes to young kids, there’s no reason they should be subjected to any form of violence that supplants fear or other shaky feelings and emotions. I myself fear that dodgeball is just that.
I had experience with dodgeball in school. On the playground, that field of fear and angst for some of us non-athletes, gym teachers used to have us play a special type of dodgeball. The students would all circle around, and some newbies, those poor unlucky kids, were put inside the circle as targets. No one ever wanted to be a target, and I’m sure you can understand why.
These kids in the circle were the targets for other kids to try to hit with the balls. The kids would have to bob and weave and try to keep from being hit as long as they could. It was impossible to successfully dodge for long. The first time I played, I got hit smack in the face.
It hit me so hard, in fact, that it knocked me out. I fell down and was out for two minutes. When I woke up I started crying; it hurt a whole lot. I still felt my face throbbing a day later and I had a bruise that served as a sore reminder.
I can’t figure out where the benefit is. It’s not really a sport, it doesn’t teach anything but brutality.
Is the goal of the activity to teach kids to try to stay alive while others attack them? And if so, how twisted is that?
When I look back to my own childhood, I am astounded to think about kids being able to play this way. There are so many other games to play while on recess. Why would schools want to encourage a game that is based on being violent?
I can’t figure out what the real benefits are from dodgeball. Luckily this isn’t relevant to me personally anymore, because I won’t have to be in a school gym class again!

It can be really hard to start flossing. Starting a new habit is just as hard as stopping a bad habit.
Flossing specifically can be a hard habit to get started because at first your gums and teeth may be sore. It’s hard to convince ourselves to continue to do something that causes us discomfort. Just remember that if you keep it up, the soreness goes away and it gets easier and easier to floss.
It is very important to floss before bed. If you don’t floss before you get into bed, any food that is trapped between the teeth is going to be up next to the teeth, undisturbed, for 8 hours.
Why develop and keep a flossing habit?
Flossing gets where your toothbrush can’t. When you use your toothbrush there are areas of your mouth it just can’t reach.
Don’t think that flossing is old fashioned and unnecessary. Newly produced, premium toothbrushes can have a paradoxical effect on flossing. People who buy the fancy toothbrushes obviously care about oral health, and yet some of these people may be unwilling to add flossing to their regular routine.
Flossing regularly is necessary for oral healthy. Ideally you would floss after every meal, but as this is none too likely, once per day is better than nothing. Even once will greatly contribute to the overall cleanliness of your mouth and help prevent tooth decay.
You are also able to sweep up debris from under the gumline when you floss. When you floss, the up and down motion should press the floss underneath the gumline each time. If you are not sure how this is done watch some of the flossing videos posted to You Tube.
Flossing isn’t about just running a thread between your teeth. If you want to see how it is done right on your own teeth, see if the next time you to the dentist they would be willing to let you watch them do the flossing. Many times they’ll give you a hand mirror and let you see, so you’ll be able to start doing it at home too.

Isn’t it ironic? You’re in your car waiting to pull through the drive through window at your local Walgreens and what are you there to get? Weight loss medicine? Pills for high blood pressure or high cholesterol. Yes, there are some percentage of people who have an injury or are handicapped and walking into the pharmacy to pick up their medication is difficult. However, a large percentage of people who are waiting in the drive through line are just being lazy.
I own a home care agency in St. Louis that primarily provides care for the elderly. And in this capacity, every day I see what happens to both our bodies and our minds as we get older. It’s also part of my job to stay on top of the latest research on aging. If the people sitting in their cars at the drive through see what I see each day and know what I know, they probably wouldn’t be sitting in that car!
The debate is all but over. The number 1 most important thing we can do for our brains as we age is to be active and exercise. There have been a few studies that have come out recently that have shown the subjects who got regular exercise showed improvement in Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). Why is this noteworthy? Because the data shows about 15% of those with MCI are likely to develop Alzheimer’s. That’s why when the data shows that older adults who stay active have almost a 40% reduction in getting MCI, it’s important to pay attention. It’s become quite evident that we have to focus on prevention when it comes to neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s and take action against them as early as possible.
Long term exposure to physical and mental stressors results in something called oxidative stress. This oxidative stress increases the brain’s vulnerability to diseases such as-you guessed it-Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Parkinson’s is another brain disease resulting from oxidative stress.
You can protect your brain from the effects of oxidative stress, however, by regularly performing aerobic exercise. Besides the aerobic training, strength training is important also. For a recent study, researchers followed 1000 subjects, age 54 to 100, who were dementia free. The researchers followed these subjects for 4 years and assessed the strength of the subjects in nine major muscle groups. The results were incredible. Those who ranked in the top 10% for strength were 61% less likely to develop Alzheimer’s than those in the bottom 10%.
Do you need more convincing about the importance of exercise? Well, in a 2008 study published in the journal Neurology, researchers measured the midsections of 6,500 adults in middle age during the 1960s and 1970s and then followed up with them 36 years later. The people who had the largest midsections in their 40s were three times more likely to have developed dementia when compared to those with the least amount of fat around the middle.
During normal aging, brain function declines due to the loss of neuronal connections, blockages of blood supply and a decrease in nerve-signaling chemicals. For many years, it was commonly believed that the aging brain was incapable of growing new brain cells. But that belief was wrong. Through studies conducted by Fred Gage, PhD and his colleagues at the Salk Institute of Biological Studies, it’s been shown that more exercise results in more growth of brain cells, a longer life for brain cells and the better able the brain cells are to connect with other cells. By simply walking briskly for 40 minutes four times per week, you can increase the blood flow to the areas in your brain that are responsible for growing new brain cells. The conclusion from these studies is that exercise and movement is so critical to the health of the brain, that much of the brain’s decline we attribute to the aging process is actually because we don’t get enough exercise.
Hopefully this will give you reason to pause the next time you start to pull into the Walgreen’s drive thru. Next time I challenge you to park at the far end of the lot and walk in to get your medicine. Who knows, if you keep up that mindset, one day you may not even need that prescription!

We have all seen the documentaries about fast food restaurants on low-income areas and how they cause the residents in the area to become obese. The simple fact that the restaurant is there is very bad for the residents.
For the most part, poor men and women do not have many choices when it comes to food that they can afford. They also tend to go to restaurants that are close by. For these people that one dollar fat-filled hamburger looks like a great opportunity and the people eat as many as they can afford. These are terrible in calorie quantity and very bad for their health.
There hasn’t just been one documentary on the subject either. This has become a huge issue in many areas and many people have covered reporting this situation. New York’s Area Council got involved and put into effect new labeling laws that it thought would help to handle this issue.
Even with the new laws things haven’t changed. According to a recent survey New York’s poor people are still victims of a terrible diet in their low-income neighborhoods.
Contradicting this is the metropolis. They (McDonald’s and KFC) seem to think that men and women are ordering food with less fat and calories. How could this be when an independent shows otherwise? It just doesn’t seem right.
One way to look at it is that chains like Subway sell healthier low cost sandwiches and lots of them and those figures are being considered in the survey of the more unhealthy chains like McDonalds and KFC. This throws a wrench in the figures.
In all reality thins is misrepresentation of facts that could end up being deadly. The studies by the metropolis are looking at what occurs in wealthier neighborhoods where the people can afford and tend to get their fast food at restaurants like Subway. They are using this information to pad’ the numbers in the poorer neighborhoods.
All-in-all the City’s statement is useless. The poor are still making bad food choices.
